15 days later, we haven’t flown to China. At least, that we would expect to find. A rigid, closed, chaotic and unsophisticated China. In fact, we found smiling military, people dancing on the street, artistic representations, friendly people and a latent organization, contrary to the stereotypes that we had on this country.
In Beijing, we found a city cohabiting with the imperial heritage, the present Communism and the future modernity. In Shanghai, we were presented with the vision of a Eastern representation of the West, a symbol of how China intends to assert itself as a true World leader. Hong Kong breathes differently. Not denying the East, assumes a Western dimension given by its English past, and, therefore, presents a mixed but consolidated personality. Macau was the materialization of the Portugueseness we heard so much during our school years. For the first time, we saw, live, the impact of the Portuguese Discoveries in the World.
4 different ways of “being China”. No one with more legitimacy, but only different representations of what makes a country. Knowing these 4 cities is like making a small trip into the past and the future. More than enlightening us about the importance of tolerance, the Chinese stage awakened us for a genuine curiosity regarding its history and culture. For the first time, our “eurocentric glasses” fell, making us realize that, just as the Sun does not revolve around the Earth, the World does not revolve around the West.

15 dias depois, não voámos para a China. Pelo menos, aquela que esperaríamos encontrar. Uma China rígida, fechada, caótica e pouco sofisticada. Na verdade, encontrámos militares sorridentes, pessoas a dançar na rua, representações artísticas frequentes, pessoas afáveis e uma organização latente, contrariando os estereótipos que tínhamos sobre este País.
Em Pequim, encontrámos uma cidade que coabita com a herança imperial, o Comunismo presente e a modernidade futura. Em Xangai, foi-nos apresentada a visão de uma representação Oriental do Ocidente, um símbolo de como a China se pretende afirmar como um verdadeiro líder mundial. Hong Kong, respira de forma diferente. Não renegando o Oriente, assume uma dimensão Ocidental que lhe é conferida pelo passado Inglês, tendo, por essa razão, uma personalidade mista mas consolidada. Macau foi o materializar da Portugalidade de que tanto ouvimos falar durante os anos de escola. Pela primeira vez, vimos reflectido, in loco, o impacto dos Descobrimentos Portugueses no Mundo.
4 diferentes formas de “ser China”. Nenhuma com mais propriedade do que outra, mas diferentes representações do que faz um país. Conhecer estas 4 cidades é fazer uma pequena viagem pelo passado e futuro. Mais do que ter sublinhado a importância da tolerância em relação a outros povos, a etapa chinesa despertou-nos um interesse genuíno sobre esta história e cultura milenar. Pela primeira vez, os nossos “óculos eurocêntricos” caíram, fazendo-nos ver que, da mesma forma que o Sol não gira à volta da Terra, o Mundo não gira à volta do Ocidente.
